159) A crime in a monastery!!

 جريمة في دير!!

I noticed something very serious in the second Monastery, I’d like to point it out at Saint Taklehaimanot’s website, especially for the Ethiopian brethren..  I will also bring the Ethiopian Patriarchate’s attention to it after we get back to Addis Ababa God willing..  Which is in that Monastery, and maybe at other places I haven’t seen yet, they repaint the ancient icons..  I mean they paint it again from A-Z over the old icon with new paints, and adding the details that might not be showing or wiped out from the original icon..!!  Maybe their intent is to revive these icons or something, but they do draw it again over the picture!  There is no sign for the original painting, except that the new picture is the same as the old one, but with new paints!  So the ancient icon is totally destroyed..!!  As if you are drawing a new picture over a worn-out wood, or a ragged animal skin..!

كان هناك أمراً خطيراً جداً لاحظته في الدير الثاني، وأود أن أنبه إليه هنا بصوت عالٍ على موقع القديس تكلا هيمانوت، خاصة للأخوة الأحباش..  وسوف أقوم أيضاً بالتنبيه إليه في البطريركية الحبشية بعد رجوعنا إلى أديس أبابا بإذن الله..  وهو أنهم في ذلك الدير، وربما في أماكن أخرى لم أرها بعد، قد قاموا بإعادة رسم بعض الصور الأثرية..  أقصد أنهم يقومون بتلوين الصور مرة أخرى من الألف إلى الياء بألوان جديدة، وإضافة تفاصيل قد لا تكون واضحة أو ممسوحة في الأيقونات الأصلية..!!  ربما يكون الهدف إعادة إحياء هذه الصور أو غيره، ولكنهم يقومون بالرسم مرة أخرى فوق الصورة!  فلا يوجد أي أثر للصورة الأصلية، سوى أن الصورة الجديدة هي نفس الصورة القديمة، ولكن بألوان جديدة!  فيتم تحطيم الصورة الأثرية تماماً..!!  وكأنك تقوم برسم صورة جديدة على خشب بالٍ أو جلد قديم لحيوان..!

The restoration of ancient picture is something totally different, even protecting the pictures is something else..  What they are doing is burying the heritage behind new paints!!  And dyeing the pictures in a very tough way..  I felt jealousy and great loss due to that..  That is a crime against genuine religious heritage, that shouldn’t be played with by anyone who thinks that he/she is responsible for that place or other!!  The pale colors and the incomplete drawings has their own position, and a beautiful scent of history, that makes the one get in touch with the past in its highest forms..  What you see now is what someone drew 600 years ago..  That is magnificent..

ترميم الصور الأثرية أمراً مختلفاً تماماً، وحتى حماية الصور أمر مختلف..   ما يفعلونه هو دفن للتراث وراء طلاء حديث!!  وصبغ للصور بطريقة صعبة..  شعرت بالغيرة والخسارة الفادحة من جراء هذا الأمر..  فهذه جريمة في حق تراث ديني أصيل لا ينبغي أن يعبث به مَنْ قد يظن في نفسه أنه مسئول عن هذا المكان أو غيره!!  إن الألوان البالية والرسومات الغير كاملة لها وضعٌ خاص، ورائحة تاريخية جميلة، وتجعل الشخص يتلامس مع الماضي بأجمل صوره..  فما تراه الآن هو ما رسمه شخص منذ 600 سنة..  وهذا أمر رائع..

It is like a mother raising her child on pure foods, protecting him from air-dust by installing special air-filters, giving him mineral water to drink, and raise him up for years like that..  That poor child when he has to face the real world from tap-water, various foods, he’ll discover that his mother destroyed his immune system, as his body is not used to deal with various viruses..  The goal is good, but it is wrong, even devastating!!  Wrong love!

الأمر شبيه بأن تقوم أم بتربية ابنها على طعام خاص نقي جداً، وتقوم بحمايته من الأتربة خارج المنزل بوضع أجهزة تنقية للجو، وإعطاءه ماءً معدنياً فقط مثلاً لشربه، وتقوم بتربيته على هذا الأمر بضعة سنوات..  ولكن هذا الطفل المسكين عندما يضطر لأن يحتك بالحياة الطبيعية من ماء من الصنبور أو أطعمة مختلفة، سيكتشف أن أمه قد حطمت مناعة جسمه، ولم يعتد جسده على التعامل مع الفيروسات المختلفة..  قد يكون الهدف نبيل، ولكنه خاطئ، بل مدمر!!  محبة خاطئة!

Another example, in Alexandria, Egypt for instance, when they get an ancient monument that was sinking in the Mediterranean Sea..  The right thing for that is not to dry it in the sun from the sea water, nor even washing it, or soaking it in un-salty water..!  That maybe the normal thinking or the first suggestions to be done by any person..  But the scientific method is to study the percentage of salt in that water, then put the piece in a basin filled with the same salty water for a while, and by minimizing by time the percentage of salt in the water-basin that has the monument that was saved from the sea, till all the salt that is inside the piece is absorbed, and preparing it to be taken out of the water for display..  Even there are some monuments that it was discovered that if they get it out of the water, they won’t know how to recondition it, or it might not bear the life out of the water..  And it was agreed upon leaving them as a living underwater-museum..  That is the best for them..

مثال آخر، وهو مثلاً في الإسكندرية بمصر عندما يتم إخراج قطعة أثرية غارقة من البحر المتوسط..  الوضع السليم لهذه القطعة عدم تجفيفها في الشمس من الماء، أو حتى عدم غسلها أو حتى نقعها في الماء الحلو..!  ربما يكون هذا هو التفكير العادي أو الأول لأي شخص..  ولكن الوضع العلمي هو أن يتم دراسة نسبة ملوحة الماء، ثم توضع القطعة في حوض ماء مالح بنفس درجة الملوحة لفترة معينة، ويتم مع الوقت تقليل درجة الملوحة من الماء الحوض الموضوع فيه القطعة الأثرية المُستخرجة من البحر، حتى يتم امتصاص كل الملوحة من القطعة الأثرية، وتجهيزها للخروج من الماء، والعرض..  ففي الحالة الأولى سيتم تدمير القطعة الأثرية، أو على الأقل تقصير عمرها خارج الماء..  بل هناك بعض القطع الأثرية التي تم اكتشاف أنه إذا تم إخراجها من الماء، لن يتم معرفة كيفية ترميمها، أو قد لا تحتمل الحياة فترة خارج الماء..  وتم الاتفاق على أن تكون موجودة كمتحف حي تحت الماء..  فهذا أفضل لها..

Restoring and repairing old portraits, books and antiques is a special kind of science, being studied all around the word..  Those new pictures that they repaint over the ancient portraits may have nice and beautiful colors, even maybe better than the old ones!  But they can’t be compared by the original beauty, even if it is not good!!  I hope that this message reaches who can put a stop to that matter, and we’ll make sure to escalate this to the reverend fathers at the Ethiopian Patriarchate.

إن ترميم الصور والكتب والقطع الأثرية هو علمٌ خاصٌ، يتم تدريسه على مستوى العالم..  الصور الجديدة التي يقومون بإعادة رسمها فوق الصور الأثرية ربما تكون جميلة وألوانها متميزة وأفضل من السابقة حتى!  ولكنها لا تُقارَن بالجمال الأصلي حتى وإن قَبُح!!  أتمنى أن تصل هذه الرسالة لمن يستطيع أن يضع حداً لهذا الأمر، وسوف نعمل على تصعيده إلى الآباء الأجلاء في البطريركية الحبشية.
