188) Awake for 24 hours

 بدون نوم لمدة 24 ساعة

During the hour that I took to climb the mountain, heading for Degoma the nearby village, I felt so sad and frustrated about this situation..  And was wondering do I write it on the website or not..  I saw that all the events should be written as they happened without any retouches..

وفي خلال الساعة من صعود الجبل والتوجه لقرية ديجوما، شعرت بضيق شديد وإحباط من هذا الموقف..  وفكرت هل أكتبه على الموقع أم لا..  ورأيت أنه يجب كتابة كل الأحداث كما هي بلا رتوش.. 

I was thinking of how I wasted two days uselessly..  How that whole week on Gonder was one of the most useless times here..  And how sleeping in the forest was worthless..

أخذت أفكر في أنني أضعت يومان بلا هدف..  وكيف مر هذا الأسبوع في جوندر من أكثر الأوقات ضياعاً هنا..  وكيف كان المبيت في الغابة بلا قيمة..

Finally I reached the village at 8.00 am., waited for a while..  The complexity of that day didn’t finish yet..  One of the villagers that was present in the Monastery came..  People were watching that foreigner that was standing over there..  He thankfully donated to tell them what had happened..  And I understand nothing but signs followed by mockery..  That was a very remote village, no one comes to it even from around it..  That was the story there at that day!

وأخيراً وصلت للقرية في الثامنة صباحاً، وانتظرت برهة من الوقت..  ولم يكن صعوبة هذا اليوم قد مرَّت بعد.. فقد أتى أحد أبناء القرية الذي كان موجوداً في الدير..  وكان البعض يشاهدون هذا الأجنبي الواقف هناك..  وتبرع مشكوراً بإخبارهم عما حدث..  وأنا لا أفهم شيئاً سوى من الإشارات التي أعقبها تهكمات..  كانت تلك قرية متطرفة جداً، ولا يأتيها أي أناس من خارجها حتى..  فكان هذا قصة اليوم هناك!

After a while I asked one of the workers at a shop about the “makina” (machine), which is the truck that goes to Maxiniet..  He told me it comes at 5 (which is 11 am)!!  I inquired about any other bus, or might it come earlier..  He told me that it is a very weak possibility..  I had to wait at that place for three hours..!

وبعد فترة سألت أحد أصحاب المحال عن "الماكينة" (أي الأتوبيس) الذي يذهب إلى ماكسيميانت..  فأخبرني أنه يأتي في الخامسة (أي الحادية عشر ظهراً)!!  واستفسرت هل يأتي غيره أو قد يأتي مبكراً..  فقال لي احتمال ضعيف..  كان عليَّ أن أنتظر في هذا المكان ثلاثة ساعات..!

 

 

It got even worse when some children started gathering around me, each and every single one of them trying to test his/her English, or saying what others tell them to say..!  During my previous time here, the best thing to do for those who intrude on foreigners, is simply ignoring and not answering..  As answering will lead to a new long talk, and useless gatherings..  Now and then I walked away to stand at another spot in the same street, these kids go, and others replace them..  I scolded some of them away..  And asked another to send them away, he was one of the onlookers later!!  It was boring, and annoying, especially because I didn’t sleep at all last night, and because of what happened from a while in the Monastery..  Scolding them was a kind of reacting with them as I discovered!  I went to another place..  The same happened..  I gave up and took a seat on the sidewalk, waiting for the car to come..  And they stayed with me!

وزاد الأمر سوءاً عندما بدأ الأطفال الصغار في التجمهر حولي، ويحاول كل منهم تجربة ما يعرف من إنجليزية أو ما يطلب منه آخرون أن يسأله..!  من خلال الفترة السابقة، كان أفضل حل لأي شخص يتطفل على أجنبي، هو ببساطة عدم الرد والتجاهل..  حيث أن الرد سيجر حديث مطول، وتجمعات لا هدف منها..  ومن آن لآخر كنت أذهب لأقف في مكان آخر في نفس الشارع، ويذهب هؤلاء ليحل محلهم أطفال غيرهم..  انتهرت بعضهم فذهبوا..  وطلب من آخر أن يبعدهم، وقد كان أحد المتفرجين لاحقاً!!  كان أمراً مملاً، ومزعجاً، ربما خاصة لأنني لم أنم الليلة السابقة، وبسبب ما حدث منذ لحظات في الدير..  كان الانتهار هو جزء من التفاعل معهم كما اكتشفت!  وذهبت لمكان آخر..  وحدث نفس الأمر..  فاستسلمت وجلست على الرصيف، في انتظار العربة التي ستأتي..  وبقوا معي!
